Here it is December 14th and only 11 days left till Christmas but more importantly only 17 days left of my being the president of WAMES. I want to tell all of you that this has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. As silly as it might sound I had always wanted to be the president but I had also wanted to be the first female to do it. Well that never happened but those that served before me did nothing but lay a great foundation for me.
What has happened during my term? Our country elected the first black American as president, we have been involved in one of the worst wars of all times and we experienced our second depression. I mention all of this because it all had a major effect on our industry-and us. But as we always do we survived and we persevered. As we also always do we looked to each other for support and we found it. Our group is nothing short of incredible. We never turn our back on another provider that needs any type of help-be it an answer to a simple question or an entire seminar.
I have seen several people serve on our board and they all contributed in so many ways. The unselfishness of the people and their companies is again nothing short of spectacular.
Thru all of the contributions of each we did so much in my four-year term.
WAMES has continued open dialog with our state. This is something other states could only dream of being able to do. Some of you might say yeah but what did it accomplish? You are correct we didn’t always see what we wanted done but to be able to sit at a table with those that decide for you daily is in itself something great. We are also so lucky that the policy analyst is always so willing to speak to our group and keep us up to date with both bad and good news.
The board produced a new strategic plan-it had been approximately seven years since we had updated it. This is so key for us to continue on in a productive manner. It gives us focus and direction for this and other boards to come.
WAMES has merged into new social media methods. We are now on facebook and using our website better than we ever had. This organization is staying in step with the times and other groups.
WAMES has always made it a priority to provide education to its members. This is so vital to the well being of all of us-if we don’t know what is happening as well as how to handle what is happening we will not survive. Not only do we have the education piece but we make sure the members can afford to attend the events. We respond to what is happening around us-we do not give up!!
I know that there has been so much that has happened in my four years but it is so hard to remember. There is one item that stands out in my mind and that is all of friendships I made. I discovered so much about so many of our members-and it is all good. There is one person that stands out and that is Ann Barrett. She is the glue of our organization. I do not know how I could have made it thru all of the bad times with out her.
So I say good bye to all of you as your president-but I say hello as your fellow WAMES member. I plan on continuing on the board in several positions. I also encourage all of you to become involved in this organization. Like you probably always hear-something is only what you make of it. Have a wonderful 2012-lets make it OUR YEAR!!
Jean McAdams
